Max Stephan, AMFT

Max Stephan works with both adults and teenagers and has a particular interest in working with men’s issues. He works with individuals who feel stuck, disconnected from themselves, or overwhelmed by emotions. His clients often include emerging adults facing issues in launching into the world beyond their family of origin, adult children of divorce, and individuals struggling with compulsive use of video games or social media. Max helps clients build insight, emotional resilience, a stronger sense of self, and actionable skills as they navigate these challenges.

His therapeutic approach is person-centered and depth-oriented, drawing on psychodynamic principles as well as evidence-based practices. Max offers a steady, attuned presence where reflection and change can unfold naturally over time. Whether addressing anxiety, anger, identity questions, or life transitions, he tailors therapy to meet each person’s unique needs.

Max holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counseling, and Depth Psychology. He earned his undergraduate degree in Finance and Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. Under the supervision of Bradford Smallwood, LMFT, Max continues to expand his clinical skills in working with teenagers, family systems, and anger management.

Outside of work, Max enjoys playing pickup basketball, surfing or skating depending on the weather, and playing guitar. He values connection with friends and family, stand up comedy, and winding down with a favorite TV series.
